In the last few months, some parents have come forward with concerns about the fact that Mira Costa High School has never weighted grades. It was always the understanding that most colleges took the transcript and applied their own weighting formulas during the admission process. Staff still believes this to be true.
Parents reported that some colleges were not using weighting formulas when it came to merit scholarship applications.
To address this concern and question, the Board created a subcommittee to investigate the issue. This board workshop will feature a report from the Board Subcommittee on what they have learned during their three meetings. Some of the items to be discussed include:
- Local school weighting policies
- Information from the 77 colleges and universities that Costa students apply to most frequently.
- Potential drawbacks of weighting grades
- If the Board decides to weight grades, which grades would be weighted?
- How the District would execute such a policy change?
The Board will invite comments from the public on this topic after the presentation. While no decision will be made at this meeting, the Board considers the public input to be a crucial element of the decision making process.

In December of 2014, the District engaged DLR Group to facilitate the process of developing a Facilities Master Plan (FMP) for MBUSD. The resulting document will describe the District's vision for its classrooms and buildings, defining the District's dreams and needs, and guiding its planning and improvements for the future.
The FMP is being developed through the work of a number of groups:
- The Core Planning Group, which has developed the District's Guiding Principles and will help to develop Educational Specifications and provide leadership throughout the process
- Each campus' Site Committee, which will provide input into the existing conditions of buildings and the needs and desires of each school and program
- The wider MBUSD community, which is invited to provide input and participate in the process by attending any of a series of Community Forums
The FMP incorporates a number of concurrent efforts:
- Facility Assessment
- Community Outreach and Input
- Educational Specification Development
- Master Plan Development
Preliminary information and material will be presented and further community feedback will be solicited through this workshop. The draft FMP document will be presented to the Board on May 6, 2015, at 6:30 pm, and the final document will be presented to the Board on June 3, 2015, at 6:30 pm.
